Students from the Akhil Bharatiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and members of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) organised a protest march from Central Secretariat till India Gate Friday, against an event in support of Afzal Guru at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) earlier this week.
DCP (New Delhi) Jatin Narwal said 90 protesters have been detained and taken to Tilak Marg police station as they did not have permission to take out the march. While there was no violence, slogans filled the air during the march. VHP member Jitendra Sharma said, “We stand united as citizens of Hindustan against anyone who speaks against our great nation. Whether Hindu, Muslim or anyone else, if their desire is for a divided India, we are against them. There’s no place for people who wish to extend their support to separatists.”
While political outfits and their members dominated the march, others claiming to be unaffiliated politically also extended their support.
Dr Prabhakar Yadav, a medical practitioner, said, “I do not belong to any party but I am here to oppose these Islamist and communist radicals. They are always engaged in tarnishing the name of our country and support anti-national elements.”
