Cinema and Play for Young Adults in April

Dear friends (in particular, friends of our young friends!),
People's Film Collective and Swabhav Natak Dal have decided to travel with some joint shows of cinema and a play for our young friends. The shows, including interaction with children, are two-and-a-half-hour long. We want to take these shows to primary schools, high schools, corporation schools, village schools, learning centres, orphanages, juvenile homes – wherever children gather. We want to travel with these shows through the month of April.

Our approach to this joint endeavour is as follows:
_________

The Play: Haath Ghoralei Golpo

I am sure we are all acquainted with children who are addicted to cartoons on TV. It would be safe to say that this addiction is carefully manufactured. So that Kellogs, Maggi and Junior Horlicks can go about their business. But there’s no point in complaining… unless we have something else to offer. Which is what Swabhav's latest production - Haath Ghoralei Golpo – attempts to do. Here, grown-ups perform for children, trying to create live, some of the magic, thrill and action that keeps the little ones glued to the cartoon channels. It is a 35-minute performance piece, in Bangla, comprising a couple of folktales and a couple of songs. Within these two tales are hidden many smaller ones – the tale of trees, the tale of water, the tale of farming, and the tale of the damage modern civilization is inflicting on nature.

The Films: Jaadui Machchi, Chanda Ke Joote, Two and Two

The three short films tell three different stories with children and young adults as protagonists. What happens in the space called school, where learning is supposed to mirror life? How does the school in fact treat children? Whose school is it anyway, and who is excluded? Can children negotiate and subvert rules and exclusions? The sorrow, magic, wishes, little joys and disappointments, the riddles of life, the excitement of discovery, the seeking of answers, the resilience of children - are at the heart of these stories picked from lived lives.
