Its very sad although not very unexpected as she was battlingagainst her cancer for many years. Eleanor's contribution to Ambedkarite scholarship is monumental insofar as she is one of the pioneering scholars who dedicated herself to the task with due empathy. She will be remembered as one who introduced Ambedkar and Dalit movement to the Western world and inspired a battery of scholars including Gail to follow in her footsteps. Her writings are full of insights into the development of Babashaeb Ambedkar's thoughts and actions. I have been fortunate to have some acquaintance with her and discuss her nuanced observations on certain issues. I remember, when my tract on Post-Ambedkar dalit movement was on the way of publication by Sugawa, she read it and sent for me when she came to Mumbai. That was our first meeting. She had approvingly discussed some of the points therein but kept on teasing me by calling marxist whenever we met subsequently. I would treasure those jovial memories for ever. It is a tremendous loss to the world of downtrodden as it has lost its genuine friend.
