Over 225 Muslim men from all over India today issued a statement expressing full support to the demand of the Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan (BMMA) and other Muslim organisations and individuals for the abolition, and declaration as illegal, of the current practices of triple talaq (instant divorce) and nikaah-halala in India.

The signatories are from diverse professional fields: Principals, professors, research scholars and students; social activists, lawyers and media professionals; physicians, surgeons, ophthalmologists; entrepreneurs, businessmen, corporate executives and engineers, authors, poets, fiction writers and playwrights; artists, actors, directors, screenplay/dialogue writers and lyricists; film makers and photographers; creative directors, sound and light designers and interior designers; retired government servants including army general and IAS; librarians, office assistants and drivers.

Among the signatories are several award winners and prominent personalities from the film industry and theatre: Resul Pookutty (Oscar Award Winner), Saeed Mirza, Javed Siddiqi, Hasan Kamaal, Anjum Rajabali, Shafaat Khan, Talat Jaani, Feroz Abbas Khan.

The signatories hail from 36 different cities across several states: Ajmer, Allahabad, Bengaluru, Baramati, Calicut, Champaran, Chennai, Coimbatore, Ghaziabad, Hyderabad, Indore, Jaipur, Jalgaon, Kishanganj, Kolkatta, Latur, Lucknow, Madurai, Mangalore, Mumbai, Muzaffarnagar, Mysuru, Nipani, Noida, New Delhi, Panvel, Patna, Pondicherry, Pune, Rampur, Ranchi, Sangli, Satara, Sholapur, Vadodara, Varanasi. A few are from Abu Dhabi, Oman, Saudi Arabia, UAE, USA.
