Shehla Rashid Update on some real issues reg JNU library:

Shehla Rashid
Update on some real issues reg JNU library:
1) Reg unsubscription from SCOPUS database: Due to the overall fund-cut on JNU library being imposed by the Central Government, the Library Advisory Committee has been steadily reducing journal subscriptions. Even crucial databases such as SCOPUS, which are invaluable to all students across disciplines, have been unsubscribed. This is damaging the quality of research of JNU research scholars, and we've been writing to the JNU administration that SCOPUS subscription should be restored. The chief librarian is saying that he has approved the restoration, but it is now subject to approval by Rector-II and an additional funding of Rs. 16 lakh will be needed. I've clearly told the JNU VC, Rector and Librarian, that we cannot succumb to the logic of budgetary cuts. If JNU is the best university, we should assert and apply for more funding. Excellence fund can also be applied for, because JNU is entitled to it. We will continue to follow up on, and resolve this issue.
2) Reg closing of upper floors: I spoke to the chief librarian on closing of upper floors and I have been informed that this is a part of overall restructuring of the library floors. In order to get fire clearance, it is required that the upper floors only have stacks where limited number of people may be present at any given time. So the reading halls situated on the upper floors will be shifted to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd floors. When I asked about capacity, I was assured that the overall capacity would increase, rather than decrease. However, for the duration of the construction work, the reading halls are likely to remain affected. We will write to the chief librarian to explore alternative spaces till the time the construction is complete. During the restructuring work, the main entrance of the library will be closed and some other entrances will have to be made operational. I've asked for a written notice from the librarian, stating all these issues. There should be a circular by today evening.
