#Azaadi
It still rings in our ears at times, the rhythmic chanting of the slogan for Azaadi that became the anthem of the Stand with JNU movement.. It reverberated not just in JNU, or in Delhi, but across India as also the world. The Administration Block rechristened Azaadi Square or Freedom Square certainly became the centre of the carnival of freedom through the darkest of times. The small steps at the Azaadi Square held the potential for giant leaps.

This slogan - Azaadi - in fact defined in many ways the fundamental tenets of the movement: freedom of expression, freedom from fear, freedom or autonomy of an university, freedom from the doctrine of Hindutva, freedom from Brahmanism, freedom form oppression, as also the declaration of freedom against fascism. Through the entire course of the movement and even today, the struggle has been to expand the idea of Azaadi, of freedom. Freedom from caste, from patriarchy, from hindutva fascism, from neo-liberal assault, from Privatization. Freedom for workers, peasants, women, dalits, Muslims, other oppressed genders, oppressed nationalities, for adivasis. Freedom to speak against the powers that be. Freedom to criticize. Freedom to dream.
Towards an ever-expanding notion of Azaadi, against all status quoist forces!
