Dear Friends,
The adage 'the media is the fourth pillar of democracy' has never been more relevant than in our contemporary time. Today, the Press and the media face the dual challenge of resisting pressure from vested interests, and having to self-regulate to ward off allegations of 'media trials', and ‘paid news’.
Free and fair news reporting demands not just impartial presentation of the story but also the space that can be navigated fearlessly to unearth the truth. Unfortunately, we see this space of fearless reporting steadily shrink. Journalists have mysteriously died in the last year while reporting on issue of public importance like land grabs, illegal mining, gang rapes, etc.
A recent report of the media watchdog, Reporters Without Borders, ranks India as 'Asia’s deadliest country for media personnel, ahead of both Pakistan and Afghanistan.' Worldwide, the report places India, the world's largest democracy, just below Iraq and Syria, the two war ravaged countries of our times. This is indeed worrying.
It is with these formidable concerns in mind that we are organizing a panel discussion on 'Contemporary Challenges to the Freedom of Press In India' on 3rd May, 2016 at Gandhi Peace Foundation, Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg, near ITO  (Time: 5.30 pm to 8.30 pm). We hope that the panel discussion will provide fresh thoughts and strategies on dealing with the challenges, both external and internal, facing the Press.
Best Regards,
